Shaheen (a 16-rack IBM Blue Gene/P system, 65,600 independent cores, 4 GB memory per node, 222 teraflop operations) is one of the world’s fastest supercomputers in an academic environment. Additionally, several Linux clusters, along with large-scale storage facilities, are available for numerical and data-driven research, supplemented by a high-end visualization lab that host a Mechdyne-built CAVE, creating the world’s highest resolution and brightest virtual environment. A state-of the art field laboratory for exploration-seismology type experiments awaits its use for research and educational purposes. The seismic lab will consist of a fiber-linked network of over 700 portable geophone stations connected to a central recording computer along with several transportation/recording vehicles. The system is designed for easy deployment to remote sites in order to facilitate research experiments in paleoseismology, archaeology, exploration geophysics, environmental science, and tectonic processes.
